"I knew you were going to do a lot, but you went way beyond and exceeded all my expectations."

-Rahul Sengupta, skydiver and private pilot

PARACHUTE FLIGHT SAFETY COURSES

Live in person parachute flight safety courses with Brian Germain are one of the very best ways to gain both trust and skill under canopy. These canopy flight skills and safety courses allow for the added benefit of filmed and debriefed landings, specific question and a customized approach. Topics vary depending on the delivery format but may include, parachute aerodynamics, canopy control, dynamic maneuvers, flight safety, collision avoidance, flying in turbulence, navigation, patterns and accuracy, landings, advanced approaches, adrenaline management and other relevant topics.

The focus of the camp is canopy skills, but it goes deeper than other courses that I have seen out there. For instance, I do individual hanging harness training to dial in your techniques, and discover if your harness requires adjustments. I do formation flights with as many participants as time allows, using an amazing two way communication system which also records the conversation to the GoPro I use for filming our flight together. You can see more about this on YouTube if you search out the "Talking Skydives" videos. I give everyone skills drills for each jumps, and film the landings and debrief your performance and give you drills for the next jump that will help you dial in the areas that need focus. We typically do three jumps per day, weather permitting, usually from 7000 feet. The course is open to all levels, and I will field any question on any topic, so you can make this your course. It is not as structured as many of the other courses, and so I can adapt the experiences to the group very effectively. The range of experience typically spans 25 jumps up to several thousand.

While you wait for your course to happen, we highly recommend watching as videos as you have time for to prepare for the course. You can download or stream them right now!

The Teacher:

Brian Germain has over 16,000 jumps and 30 years of skydiving instructional experience. As a parachute designer, test pilot and author of The Parachute and its Pilot and host of the much-loved Skydive Radio segment "SAFETY FIRST", Brian offers a unique perspective on the topic of canopy control. His passion for flight is deeply infectious, and his masterful ways of teaching will enthrall you and leave you wanting to learn more.

The course targets parachuting skills as the primary subject matter, from the perspective of a parachute designer, avid canopy piloting enthusiast, and transcending fear specialist. Brian will, however, adapt the class to incorporate anything the hosts believe to be appropriate, as well as shaping the subject matter to fit the needs of that particular group of students.

General Topics Include:

  • Parachute Aerodynamics
  • Dynamic Maneuvers
  • Flying in Turbulence
  • Navigation
  • Pattern and Accuracy
  • Landings
  • Advanced Approaches
  • The Psychology of Adrenalin

Possible additional subjects include:

  • Packing Secrets
  • Gear Maintenance
  • Freeflying
  • Tracking Dives
  • Yoga and Meditation Techniques to enhance your skydiving

We often include jumping in the course, but that isn't necessary at all. The bulk of the learning is in the classroom, not the air. It has been aptly said: “The sky makes a terrible classroom.” That is where we test new concepts, and create concrete experiences that deepen our understanding. Even if the weather prevents us from jumping, the course is very effective in creating long-term change.

SuperCourse

Often jumpers are reluctant to join a canopy course because they do not want to be limited to only hop-n-pops all weekend. Provided that we have large enough aircraft, we can make it a "Super Course", and go to full altitude, opening at 5-6000' to work on our canopy exercises. This allows participants to work on freefall skill as well, and Brian will rotate amongst the participants to offer filmed freefall coaching with as many people as possible. This format makes the new format compatible will boogies, increasing the number of possible participants, and increasing the safety of the boogie. It is great fun!
